A Little About Us...

Lauri Kallinen

In Jyväskylä, Finland, Lauri played violin from childhood and made his first instrument as his final project to graduate from Jyväskylä Waldorf School, under the tutelage of violinmakers Mika Lahtinen and Helmut Bleffert. 

 

He attended Newark School of Violinmaking from 2006-2009. After school he worked in Germany at workshop of Wolfram Ries and at Risto Vainio in Helsinki before establishing his own business. After a couple of years he began a cooperation with Toonika, which lasted for five years.

 

In June 2021 Alpert & Kallinen Fine Violins was opened on Vänrikki Stoolin katu,

in the Töölö neighborhood of downtown Helsinki.

Mayim Alpert

After growing up in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, Mayim studied a Bachelor's degree in Music Composition as a guitarist, at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN. He continued to Red Wing, MN, to build and repair guitars. There he studied violin repair and restoration with Lisbeth Nelson Butler and fell in love with the craft.

After years working as a luthier and theatre musician in Prague, CZ, he moved to Helsinki, eventually meeting Lauri in 2015. Since 2017 he and Lauri were colleagues at Toonika, creating the strong working duo which led them to form Alpert & Kallinen Fine Violins.
